Founders Day celebration features former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates

The university will celebrate its 1853 founding during the Founders Day gala Saturday, Nov. 3, at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel. The keynote speaker is former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates. At the event, WUSTL will honor distinguished faculty, alumni and Robert S. Brookings award recipients.

Learn more about the Green Offices Program

The Office of Sustainability is hosting another set of “Brown Bag” information sessions at each WUSTL campus for the Green Offices Program. To enroll, offices accomplish a checklist of sustainable practices that lead to becoming a certified Green Office. Since the program’s launch, 61 offices have registered to participate and 27 offices have submitted checklists.

Study aims to analyze brain deterioration in kids with rare disorder

School of Medicine researchers have received a five-year, $2.7 million grant to detect and analyze differences in the brains of children with a rare illness, Wolfram syndrome. The disorder includes a severe form of diabetes, hearing and vision loss and kidney problems. Tamara Hershey, PhD, is the principal investigator.

Panel will discuss media’s role in elections

A panel discussion on the 2012 elections with leading St. Louis journalists is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in McDonnell Hall, Room 162. Repps Hudson, co-coordinator of the Communications and Journalism Program at University College, will moderate the discussion, titled “Cut Through the Media Noise to Understand the Election.” This free event is sponsored by the Gateway Media Literacy Partners. Men’s hoops ranks No. 14

The men’s basketball team is ranked No. 21 in the D3Hoops.com Preseason Top-25 poll. The Bears also were ranked No. 14 in the DIII News Preseason Top-25 Poll. WUSTL opens regular-season play Saturday, Nov. 17, against Trinity University. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. in Chicago.
